Word Launch - Patch Ministries. Monthly thoughts from our dear friend Kayla - A young missionary with a love and heart for Korea. You can email Kayla through: hardaftergod.
Well, last month I had a short “summer break” and went to Japan with a friend for a few days. Since I work for a private academy in Korea, we are only given 5 days off in the summer and 5 days off in the winter.
We ended up going to an aquarium where we were able to shake hands with an otter, visited Disney Land in Tokyo, saw many beautiful parks, ate ramen almost every day (food was expensive), and visited a strange caf. It wasn’t all that I expected or hoped for but it was refreshing. Japan felt very much like Korea but the culture was very different.
The thing that stood out to me was how calm people seemed to be in Tokyo (the largest city in the world) whereas in Korea, people are always in a hurry (Korea is known for their “ppali” culture – which means “busy” in English). As much as I loved how peaceful Japan was compared to Korea, it only made me appreciate being in Korea all the more. I know that God has called me to Korea, and there is so much that He wants to do among the people here. Well, soon after arriving back to Seoul, things started to pick up and get really busy at work.
I was so tired after working all day that as soon as I got home which takes at least 3. I’d prepare dinner and turn on You.
Tube. It was starting to become a problem as I realize I was only trying to distract myself from taking more responsibility to be fully present here and even neglected spending time with God. I found myself getting so caught up in my own thoughts and things from my past kept coming to mind. I knew deep down that I needed to spend more time with God but I wouldn’t. That is my straight answer. I have no excuses for my deliberate neglect and honestly it was hurting me more than anything.
Don’t let the noise of the world keep you from hearing the voice of the Lord. In desperation I would curl up in a fetal position on the floor and just cry out to God. I hated being so inward focused and hated thinking back on the past year of failed relationships and insecurities.
But because I was only looking at my own issues I started to overthink and that alone drove me crazy. I was doing this until one morning as I woke up a thought came to my mind, “Nothing happens by accident.” I didn’t understand it fully right away but I realized that God knows everything and that He will allow things to happen.“The more you focus on yourself, the more distracted you will be from the proper path. The more you know Him and commune with Him, the more the Spirit will make you like Him.
The more you are like Him, the better you will understand His utter sufficiency for all of life’s difficulties. And that is the only way to know real satisfaction.” John Mac. Arthur. There is so much I would love to share with you on this and how God brought some answers to some hard questions I had but I really can’t say it in one post like this. Distraction, validation, acceptance, worthiness, and trust are just some of the issues that I have had to walk through and am still walking through but God is showing me his grace. So, this past week was extremely busy for me at work and I have no idea how I was able to make it through the week alive and still have energy to incorporate any physical activity after work. Recently, a friend of mine at church and I have been trying to keep each other accountable to memorize scripture verses that are very important for Christians to know and understand. She asked me how I was able to make time to do the scripture memorization on top of all the other things I have to do.
I told her that when I get up in the morning, I turn on either You. Tube and play some Christian worship music, listen to a Christian audiobook, or a sermon podcast. This has been an effective method for me to really focus and center my thoughts for the day. At the end of the day instead of going home and jumping on You. Tube to see what’s trending, I go boxing instead and do my devotions. God did not create you to live a distracted life. God created you to live a Jesus- infused life.
This is not the ideal daily schedule and I have no answers for you as to how you should spend your time. I’m hoping that my schedule will soon slow down and that I won’t become as overwhelmed as I am now. Like I mentioned earlier, there is only so much I can write in one post but as time goes by I will continue to share things with you. Thanks again for journeying with me!
Kayla. Because He bends down and listens, I will pray as long as I breathe!” Psalm 1. TLB) How do you get to know someone? When it comes down to it, it’s simple: you talk with and spend time with that person.
Your relationship with God is no different. If you want to get to know God, what He loves and what His desires and passions are, you need to spend time with Him.
Prayer is one of the ways you can do this. Praying is simply having a conversation with God. It’s telling Him what’s going on in your life. It’s asking Him for your needs, yes, but it’s also a time when you can praise Him for who He is.
He wants to be first in your life, and He wants you to worship Him in the good times and in the bad. So the more you pray and READ HIS WORD, the deeper your relationship with Him will be. Praying can often be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to it or if you haven’t done it in a while. A simple guide to help shape your prayers can be remembered by the word ACTS. ADORATION This means to worship God for who He is rather than for what He does. In adoration you verbalize your worship, praise, honor, and exaltation of God.
Many of the Psalms help to focus on the attributes of God, such as His loving kindness, His mercy, His majesty and others. Adoration is expressing your love for Him through your words.
CONFESSION As you begin your prayer with a worshipful adoration of God, the Holy Spirit will often reveal any sin in your life that needs to be confessed. To confess means to “agree with.” In other words, you agree with God concerning your sin — that it is, in fact, sin. You also agree with God that the blood of Jesus Christ has paid for that sin. This leads you to ask Him for His forgiveness, and thank Him that He has made you clean. THANKSGIVING Giving thanks expresses faith, and faith pleases God. In saying, “Thank You,” you are expressing your gratefulness and appreciation for what God does. Thanksgiving is also saying, “God, I trust You.” It is the opposite of whining and becoming bitter when things don’t work out the way you want them to.
SUPPLICATION Supplication means asking God for your needs and desires. He is the Creator of the universe, and He wants you to ask Him what’s on your heart, however minor it might seem. Anything that concerns you concerns God. That includes difficult areas in your personal life, or the needs of others. When you pray, get ready for God to speak. Listen to Him as the Holy Spirit speaks to you through the Bible, or even in the quiet stillness of your heart.
A clear answer might not come right away or in the way you’d expect, but He is listening, and He does answer. The more you pray and spend time with Him in His Word, the more you will get to know who He is.
Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off.” Proverbs 2. RSV) Sometimes, it’s difficult to enjoy life when you look around and see other people enjoying life. They have the things you don’t have, but desperately desire.
You let yourself think, “She has it all together, and she isn’t even a believer. Why does she have it so good while I’m barely hanging on?” The tinge of jealousy can eventually become full- blown bitterness if you don’t keep it in check. As Christians, it’s important for us to remember this: God “makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5: 4. RSV). And we’ll all have joy. God isn’t treating us unfairly when we experience pain and suffering; He’s treating us equally as human beings.
But the difference between believers and non- believers is that those who don’t follow Him lack the future hope of heaven or a Savior to lean on. A life without Christ is more miserable than anything on earth. The passage in Proverbs encourages us not to pay attention to the ungodly and their seemingly happy lot in life, but to focus on our walk with Christ and strengthening it — no matter what we’re experiencing. Our temporary desires will be fulfilled eternally in a perfect afterlife in heaven. That’s our hope, and that’s what we need to share to those who don’t yet know Him! Dear Lord, forgive me for envying those who do not know You, because it is much better to struggle in life with You than to live life without You. Please give me the strength to continue on in You.
Take Action. Who have you been jealous of lately? Instead of stewing in your bitterness, take some time to pray for this person. If he or she is an unbeliever, pray that they would find the hope found in Jesus! And so our lives are characterized by this self- fulfilling prophecy.
As the writer of the proverb above says, “For as he thinks within himself, so he is. Seeing ourselves as we were in our pre- conversion state, powerless over the things that plagued us as non- believers, we are not capable of living a victorious Christian life. Therefore, we continue in the same thought cycles, carrying out the same patterns of behavior, believing ourselves to be totally powerless to change. But according to Scripture, we are new creatures in Christ (2 Corinthians 5: 1. Plus, His divine power has given us everything we need to live a godly life (2 Peter 1: 3).
As we begin to see ourselves as Christ describes us in Scripture, we are able to rebuke the lies we’re tempted to believe with the truth of His Word. We can put the failures of the past in the past and press on towards a growing, progressive relationship with Him.
